What is Thai Boxing?
Thai Boxing or Muay Thai is the national sport and cultural martial art of Thailand. Muay Thai is a stand up striking system that combines punches, kicks, knees, and elbows with clinching techniques. It is often referred to as “The Art of 8 Limbs” due to the 8 weapons for striking, 2 hands, 2 shins, 2 knees, and 2 elbows. Modern day Muay Thai is derived from the self-defense system used by the Thai Army centuries ago know as Muay Boran. During the 1920s-30s King Rama VII modernized the Thai martial arts competitions, introducing referees, boxing gloves, rounds, and western boxing rings. As the national sport of Thailand, Muay Thai competitions are held daily in stadiums of all sizes throughout Thailand. The 2 most famous and prestigious stadiums where competitions are held are Rajadamnern Stadium and Lumpinee Stadium. At Heavy Hitters Thai Boxing we teach traditional Muay Thai classes as well as more fitness orientated Kickboxing classes.
