Great performance today by Ruben in his smoker against a strong, experienced opponent. He weathered an early barrage and by round 3 settled into a good rhythm and landed strong kicks to the legs and body. A lot of people didn't believe he's only been training a year based on his performance!!!

Working some low kick defend and return drills in tonight's fundamentals class. Putting the jab first forces students to sit their weight back on the rear leg to check properly, reinforcing proper low kick check body mechanics. Returning with a kick is just one the variations of returns we reviewed. Don't counter the same way all the time or you'll become predictable and make it easy to counter the counter. Keep your opponent guessing, create openings.

One of our favorite drills in Intermediate class, the 1 for 1 drill. Students throw 1 strike at a time in a volley, this forces students to reset to their base after striking, defend the strike appropriately, and return with their own strike. Realistic fight sequencing drills are the key to success in the ring.

Fundamentals class drill to reinforce proper kick placement and get the hip turned over. To deliver the most damage with body kicks the point of impact should be the lower shin 2-3 inches above the foot. This allows for maximum whip from the hip to shin generating the most force upon landing. Treat your kick like swinging a bat, your hip is the handle and your lower shin is the sweet spot. Keep the handle in front and use your rotation to generate power through thevsweet spot.

More than just a conditioning drill. Our finisher in class this morning was 1 minute of continuous teeps to kicks. This drill will definitely help your conditioning, especially muscle conditioning for your hips. It also forces students to maintain proper balance, not overextend the leg on the teep, and reset your base after the kick. Drillers make killers!!!

We focus on giving all of our students a strong understanding of fundamental techniques through simple, but extremely effective and important drills. A few highlight pics from 2023! Our competition team took a big step forward this year with some big wins, some hard fought battles, and lots of new faces getting their feet wet with competition. The thing I am most proud of our fighters for is that every fight we lost was a close one. We don't look for easy fights, and don't hesitate to move up in weight or experience to get ring time. We are already in the process of getting people lined up for competition in 2024 and plan on having several people making their debuts. I also can't thank enough all the people that come in and help all our fighters get ready for their fights, that includes every student in the gym. Just because you aren't a fighter doesn't mean you aren't part of the team. Sparring, clinching, drilling, holding pads, just being in class is a helpful motivator to anyone getting ready for a fight. In particular, special thanks goes out to @louxbot , @marqmidd , @nesinpenn , trot_trot_goose , @samuelvalenti , and @lit.chica for always showing up and helping out whenever needed. This past Saturday these 2 dudes stepped in the ring at @muaythaisuperseries. Romel kicked off the show for his first amateur fight after just 7 months of training. He fought a great fight and won all 3 rounds! We have some things to work on moving forward but he showed why he has a ton of potential and can't wait to get back in the ring. Patrick was up next, he took the fight on 12 days notice against an opponent from a gym we respect a lot in @hardknocksboston. It was a great back and forth fight against a more experienced opponent, we didn't get the win but Patrick continues to impress everytime he gets in the ring. Congrats to our opponent and his Coach @thejakeman on a great performance. The biggest loss of the evening was @marqmidd being defeated by his camera and failing to get a pic of the 3 of us all looking at the camera, but he continues to be a great help in the corner and in camp. All in all, we're very happy with both of their fights and for being part of a great show! Great competition team training today! Lots of fights/smokers/exhibitions coming up over the next few months, looking to close out 2023 with some more solid performances in the ring. Big ups to Dominic for doing an awesome job at his first competition team training today!

This past Saturday Chris and Jared both stepped in the ring for @gut_check_championship_series and came away with their hands raised! Chris's last fight in July saw him put on a dominant first round but start to gas out in rounds 2 and 3 and losing a close decision.  He immediately was back in the gym 2 days later to start increasing his conditioning.  He would come in early to run on his own, do sprint work, and just overall up the intensity of his training.  All that work clearly payed off as he was able to out point a very strong, tricky, opponent, using a Muay Mat style to walk him down and score with strong low kicks and hard punches.  We even let him throw a couple spinning heel kicks in round 3. Jared was up next, taking on an opponent who stepped up in weight and on short notice to take the fight.  Our game plan was the same, control the range with your legs and then press into the clinch with a Muau Khao style when needed.  Jared did a great job of staying composed while controlling the action.  He was able to land strong knees and elbows in the clinch and walk away with a unanimous decision. Both guys did a great job listening and executing and made me a very proud Coach.  We have a very busy next couple of months with these 2 getting back in there along with some new, and possibly old, faces stepping into the ring. We were planning on having a booth set up so we could do some Muay Thai demos, hand out some promotional stuff, and sell some swag. Unfortunately the @fishtown_district has decided to proceed with this event during a tropical storm and is not offering refunds to the over 120 vendors that already paid and registered for their spot. There is no way we are going to have our Coaches and Students sit outside in the rain and wind all day. The most laughable part is that they cited "no call for strong winds" as a reason for not post-poning the event. In the future, hopefully the @fishtownfeastivale will have a back up plan instead of making small businesses choose to either set up in the rain and risk damaging their merchandise or just forfeit the hundreds of dollars they charged to have a booth.

Young Aaron has been training with us for 6 months now and just stepped up into our advanced class for the first time tonight. Lunge kicks are a great drill for beginners to learn to drive off the base leg to generate power. In Muay Thai, we want to throw for power when we kick. No snapping the leg, hitting with the foot, or slapping the kick. Use your base leg to drive your whole body force behind the kick in one smooth motion.

They say one of the ways you can tell if someone has been training a long time is how pretty their body kick looks. When done properly a body kick should look quick, strong, and balanced, while at the same time looking almost effortless to throw. Tuesday night kick Sparring in Intermediate class. Kick sparring is a great way to work on your rhythm and timing. If you are too stiff it's easy to see your kicks coming. Good rhythm and proper timing will make your kicks land clean.

Proper rhythm and timing are what makes a fighter successful in the ring. Good rhythm will help keep you relaxed and loose making your strikes flow stronger and more effectively, as well as helping to establish feints and create holes in your opponent's defense. Good timing is knowing what and when to throw certain strikes to exploit the openings you create. In Patrick's most recent fight before the 2nd round started I told him to keep throwing his left kick to the body and start using feints to set it up, then at the end of the round throw the kick up to the head. His set up and timing worked beautifully and resulted in a TKO finish at the end of the round. While the Jab is considered the most important punch in boxing, many people consider the Teep to be the most important strike in Muay Thai. It can be used to control range, defend strikes, set up attacks, and when set up properly can be used as a very effective fake or feint to create openings. Here you can see our fighter Jared landing a perfectly timed teep to defend his opponents kick. As a taller fighter we spent a lot of time before this fight working on his teeps to control the range, and it showed as he cruised to a unanimous decision victory. Tuesday nights are for Dutch drills. Dutch drills is taking the theoretical techniques we practice and learning how to use them in live situations.
